Hurricane Irma Relief

District Governor, Bobbi Bird, has asked me to Chair the District 6960 Irma Relief Committee to deal with all aspects of the impact of Irma in our communities. I have already appointed members to this Committee including various members of District Leadership and Assistant Governors and AG-Elects in each of our 9 Areas. This will enable us to ascertain the status of all club members who have been affected by the hurricane in terms of displacement, the needs in our respective communities, who might need a place to stay and which club members would be willing to participate in relief work once we have determined what needs to be done.

I am extremely relieved that it appears that all our members are safe and sound, although we should not forget that some members and their communities may have suffered significant damage to their homes and businesses. I am grateful to all those members who have already reached out to me to see how they might assist.
I have asked all club Presidents to nominate a club Irma Relief Representative and together they will feed information into their Assistant Governor and AG-Elect so we can get feedback on a District wide basis. For now, while this information is being gathered, I would encourage you to stay in touch with your President and Irma Relief Representative and focus initially on relief work in your own neighborhood and those of nearby clubs. This work might, for example, include taking down hurricane shutters for seniors or garden clean ups, as just a couple of examples.

In the meantime, I am aware that members are being approached with regard to donations. If a donation is specifically for the areas covered by our District, then checks can be made out to Rotary District 6960 marked ‘Irma Relief’ and can be sent to our District Treasurer as follows:

Once the Irma Relief Committee has completed a Needs Assessment across our District, we will fall in behind the initial relief work being carried out by the Fire Department, Police Department, Red Cross and FEMA in each of our communities. We will be in touch again once we have ascertained how to mobilize Rotarians across our District for the most effective impact to help those in need.
Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you in anticipation of your co-operation, and please rest assured that we are determined to act swiftly, and show that rotarians in District 6960 are indeed, PEOPLE OF ACTION.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Sandra Hemstead
